Ephrem Feeley is one of Ireland’s leading composers of liturgical music, with over 300 pieces of music suitable for use in worship. His music has been used in Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churches worldwide, inspired by Scripture and the teachings and liturgy of the Church. His melodies are dignified and beautiful, with appealing yet often challenging harmonies, accessible to choirs and assemblies, and worthy of use in liturgy.
His music has been published in the US by GIA Publications and OCP. Much of his music is born out of years of experience playing, singing and conducting at liturgies. His compositions have won awards at major liturgical music competitions in Ireland and abroad since 1997. His Mass of Saint Paul was one of four mass settings chosen by the Irish Bishops’ Conference following the publication of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal, and is used widely throughout the English-speaking world since. His hymn A Joy for All the Earth was selected as the official hymn of the World Meeting of Families, Dublin 2018. Here in Christ we Gather was his first collection of liturgical music; this, and his second collection, Our Hearts are Restless, are published by GIA Publications.
Ephrem graduated from Mater Dei Institute in 1996 with a Distinction in Music. He studied composition under Donal Hurley, and won the W.S. Grieg prize for organ at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama under Una Russell. Ephrem teaches Music, Choir and Religion in St Joseph’s Mercy Secondary School, Navan, Ireland, where he directs the Schola, an award-winning SSA choir that is frequently in demand to perform at concerts and liturgies. He facilitates workshops in pastoral music ministry, regularly presenting at dioceses throughout Ireland, and the annual Summer School of the Irish Church Music Association. He has held the position of organist at a number of churches in Dublin and Meath.
In addition to his extensive corpus of liturgical music, he has also written over 60 songs for solo voice or choir, organ, piano and chamber music. Some of his choral music is also published by Cailíno Publications. He has composed and arranged several pieces for school and community choirs. The relationship between music and text is of special interest to him, and he is a founder member of The Solstice Trio, an ensemble specialising in the performance of contemporary English-language art-song.
